double knit is a tragedy.

i was so excited to find this cute stripey double knit and thought it would make great pants for em!!!
but man- is the fabric ever difficult to work with: snags, tears, puckers and in the end too tight!
i was thinking the whole time how great & comfy these would be--but i think i'll have to try again...

my desk. her desk.

{both decorated by little bits, or course}

lunch

a quilt as old as the hills

when nana webber left this world she left an entire house full of vintage notions, old quilt squares and one wooden rolling pin i count myself lucky to have inherited. my brother and his girl and the baby on the way have been busy redoing the old house room by room!
and i was there a few weeks ago to claim a few things i'd left behind.
i just love these crazy feedsack quilts with bits of old shirts and dresses thrown in for good measure.
they are bright beyond compare, and not my normal decor but i just LOVE them...i know i said that already. but take a look and you will see just what i mean.

momma's lil' helper

sewing with a baby is one thing. yes, it takes time to get used to...but sewing with toddler in tow is a MUCH different thing! and we have had some bit of trouble adjusting over here!
now that little bits is able and willing she wants to see and get into everything! no stone goes unturned in our house and if it's a project you are in the midst of she is sure to be all over it!
i have to laugh to myself and count myself lucky as she sorts through the piles of laundry or starts 'washing' the floor.
but some nights when she has rifled through all the quilt squares i so thoughtfully placed i have to remind myself she is just learning...by imitation--and i should be so proud!

proud!

this morning i just wanted to share some family delight!
my brother and k are having a baby in just 7 weeks!!! they have been hard at work on the old family farmhouse (which has not been updated since the 70's!) prepping for baby caleb's arrival. feathering their nest...check out k's blog all about their journey here: weewrens.
we can hardly stand waiting for him over here at our house, so you can only imagine the excitement at theirs!
alex and i used to live in that old house and always wanted to raise a paint roller or two and are living vicariously thru these two!
lots of luck to them!!!

birthday in the big city

we celebrated alise's birthday over the weekend at there amazing new apt!
i even got a spinning wheel out of the deal, i think! (alise's momma is a BIG fiber fan and artist).
grilled root vegetables? check!
puppy to keep baby busy? check?
a smatter of mid century furniture? check
aprons in the kitchen on a few of my fave ladies?
YOU BET!

short lived, thanks goodness.

em and i embarked on a new and very short adventure last week! pre-school.
i had the chance to work as a pre-school teacher in a nearby, very mainstream setting.
we lasted 3 days.
BUT the mornings were fun in there own way, packing up 3 lunches and heading out "for school".
i am so glad i know about alternatives to educate the young child!
but actually it was more inter personal differences than anything else. pretty hard to teach a classroom full of children while fighting them to put away there portable video games, and no hugs at nap time- unbelievable!
i have a fondness for old pre-k/kindy classrooms...the linoleum floors, those tiny rectangular windows that jut out, the class pet...
our classroom had none of those charms...except "mister nibbles" the class bunny.
it was worth it just for that.

note:
the above pictured classroom is NOT the one we went to...it's the kind we wouldn't mind...

oh brother.

my brother and i have always been close. since our parents split up when we were kids it was always just us.
he understands me in funny ways that no one does- like- when i went to stay the weekend with him and his girl he had my room all set up including a lil' teevee vcr combo equipped with an old vhs tape from our childhood full of old cartoons and the most amazing early 80's commercials. this particular still pairs 2 of my most fave things:
dutchy-ness
and old teevee!
oh edward.

a little something to love

yes, the love affair with clawfoot tubs continues.
like trying to trace an image i know so well i run my hand across the side...trying to match it to the one i remember.
..none of these quite made the cut and so the hunt continues!

new for school

as little bits and i will be attending our local waldorf school one day a week (and hoping to fill our own home class!) i have undertaken the simple task of making her her "school clothes". in my day school clothes were defined as the things your mama made you in late august for your birthday and a mix of things from 2 grandma's. and actually that was quite an eclectic mix.
think calico sewn up with tiny hand stitched peter pan collars meets sears' and penny's denim and jackets with a pinch of nordstom's or filene's thrown in for good measure. patten leather shoes, buster browns, smocked dresses with my brothers hand me down corduroy pants.
it explains a fair amount about my current style!
well here i am constructing my little one's clothes mostly from thrifted felted sweaters (the mosey way!) and also setting about sewing up a few simple dresses and maybe 1 cozy jacket if i get to it...
here's the new dress to add to the pants from last week...
little fabric cut out's inspired by my new friend simone!
